Speak to the Streets 3 Review (April 09)

Speak to the Streets

800 people packed into Stylus – Leeds University on Sunday for what felt like the hiphop event of the century! Speak to the Streets – Pat Regans Legacy.

Djs (Renegade – an ex member of the Scratch Perverts) and Lean Rock (USA) playing a mix of seemless tribalstyle funk breaks and hiphop while kids and adults of all abilities threw shapes ALL OVER THE VENUE – even walking up the stairs meant stepping round dancers and crews – and IT WAS ALL LOVE – no attitude.

The message from the host (Pat Regans Son – Shane “10 Tonn”) was strong – the kids are the weapons – they claim their respect through their ability (whether via lyrics, breaking, djin).
As the kids lined up to battle each other “they don’t need weapons – these kids are THE WARRIORS of the streets” brought the house down and it was ON!

The moves were awe inspiring – it was nothing short of raw emotion and skill going into every second. And the crowd responded with appreciation.
The over 18s battles brought the same drama with Newcastle/Irish crew Bad Taste beating the hosting crew Flava Squad Worldwide in the final.

Nas said Hiphop is dead – maybe in America but not in Leeds and the UK
Hiphop is alive and kickin and its delivering the real deal with Fresh Jive time n time again.
